Surrey, B.C., is making strides toward establishing its first legal cannabis stores. The city council recently approved eight operators to open 12 stores across six town centers: Whalley/City Centre Cannabis, Guildford Cannabis, Fleetwood Cannabis, Newton Cannabis, South Surrey Cannabis, and Cloverdale Cannabis.
Key Details:
- Zoning Rules: Stores must be at least 200 meters from schools and community centers.
- Approval Process: Operators now need to apply for rezoning and business licenses.
- Advocacy for More Stores: Some council members support expanding beyond the initial 12 locations.
Surrey’s slow adoption of cannabis retail has led some residents to purchase from neighboring areas or black-market sources. In 2021, a study showed lower legal cannabis sales in Surrey compared to other regions in B.C.
With demand and community interest growing, Surrey may see more stores in the future, depending on council guidance. This development offers convenience for local consumers while supporting the legal market.
This major shift will not only reduce the reliance on black market suppliers, but will also negatively affect sales of Delta Cannabis Stores along the 120 Street corridor. It is commonly known that a majority of the customers that currently shop at Delta Cannabis Stores are overwhelmingly residents of Surrey. These new stores will eliminate the need for Surrey residents to travel to neighboring municipalities in order to purchase Cannabis. This will also be great for the City of Surrey by keeping valuable retail customers in the city.
